WINEMAKING

Powers wines are crafted by long-time  to showcase Washington State’s diverse microclimates and distinctive vineyards.  Deeply rooted in long term relationships with premium Columbia Valley growers, Powers Winery sources a variety of the highest quality fruit to consistently produce compelling wines of uncommon depth and complexity. The AVA Collection wines focus on varietals especially suited to their small, defined growing region. Our Reserve selections showcase bottlings from individual vineyards and highlight differences between these singular sites scattered throughout the State. All Powers wines reflect a devotion, experience and integrity that result in products worthy to carry the family name.

Vineyard Philosophy: It's all about Grower Partnerships.

Our grapes are planted, nurtured and harvested by a select group of dedicated Washington State growers with whom we share a mutual respect, a meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to caring for our people and our planet. Our grower partners, many of whom we have farmed alongside for years, have come to count on Powers Winery for sound judgment, fiscal stability, and superb wines that enhance vineyard distinction.

Our Winemaking Philosophy

In creating the Powers varietals, whether we are blending fruit from different vineyards or producing a reserve wine featuring a single vineyard, we want lush, full flavors that continue to develop and evolve after bottling. One of the benefits of working with many of the same growers and same vines season after season is an increased understanding of each vineyard’s personality and the characteristics of it’s fruit. Over the years we have become more attuned to the individual site and much more hands on throughout the production process. We use specific yeasts to extract the deep dark fruits and a rotary fermenter to intensify color and flavor without any bitter seed tannin. Through the aging process, we keep each vineyard’s fruit separate and typically rack the barrels 3 to 5 times in this initial period. Following blending trials, the new completed wines go back into oak barrels giving ample time for the broad range of flavors to fully marry. With each vintage of Powers wine, we strive to create structured and compelling varietals that realize the fruit’s full potential. We are fiercely proud of making quality wines year in and year out that are affordable, and that people enjoy around the world.

Production

Whether a single vineyard Reserve or a unique blend of diverse fruit, Powers wines have always been priced to provide exceptional value to consumers. For over the past 20+ years the winery has continued to increase production as our wines are now available throughout the United States, select Canadian Provinces, many European countries, and parts of the Pacific Rim.

Meet the Winemaker

Meet our new Head Winemaker, Steve Rothwell.  Steve has been with Powers as of August 2021.  Steve comes to Powers after 14 years with Chateau Ste. Michelle, where he was responsible for maintaining WSDA organic wine certification and compliance while honing his skills working with a wide range of wines and production levels—from small experimental lots to large volumes. His passion for wine developed through natural curiosity and experience in multiple industry roles. He began with Ste. Michelle Wine Estates scaling trucks, which led to a desire to learn more about wine, and eventually to an enology intern position. He then worked his way up to winemaker.

An alumnus of Central Washington University, Steve lives in Richland and has two young children. When he is not making wine, he loves to dabble in woodworking, gardening, and travel.
